District Office of Transition Services

The California PROMISE initiative is a federal grant that was awarded to the state of California by the US Department of Education, the Social Security Administration, the US Department of Health and Human Services, and the US Department of Labor. It is a 5 year model demonstration project being run by the District Office of Transition Services in the Division of Special Education.

Career Resource Navigators will be enrolling 520 student SSI recipients between 14 and 16 years of age throughout the District. Eligible students will be randomly assigned to a treatment group or a usual services group. The treatment group will receive additional benefits planning, become clients of Department of Rehabilitation, and get a work based learning experience. The usual group will receive the same amazing services they normally would, including the possibility of a work based learning experience.

It’s a very exciting project because if we can get 75 students to consider alternatives to SSI benefits, we can save 50 million federal dollars over the lifetime of the student- not to mention the self-esteem and increased income that comes from having competitive employment for our students.
